Descriptive info: LEARNING, THINKING AND ACTING GLOBALLY.. DAG's origins.. The inspiration and objectives of DAG are rooted in two initiatives.. 1.. The first is the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (UNCHE) in Stockholm, which addressed the environment-development problematique and launched a global effort by the international community to deal with the emerging challenges in an integrated manner.. The Conference highlighted the urgent need to eradicate poverty worldwide, to overcome the development gaps between the global North and South, to nurture the planet’s natural resources and to protect its life-support systems.. This was the first major world conference to deal simultaneously with a series of issues that hitherto were handled sectorally, ignoring the causal and structural linkages that bind them.. The Stockholm Conference and the ensuing 1974 Cocoyoc Symposium on Patterns of Development and Natural Resource Use, organized jointly by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and UNCTAD, focused attention on the questions of lifestyles, patterns of production, and consumption that today occupy a central place on the global agenda.. 2.. The second is the work of the Society for Development Alternatives (DA)  ...   decent livelihoods and environmental conservation.. While these innovations were developed with a view to improving practices in agriculture and local industry and cater for the domestic needs of very poor and marginalized people in India, they are also relevant and applicable in developing countries in general.. DA's practical work has been recognized nationally and internationally.. (DA website link click).. DAG thus represents the confluence of DA’s national and field level experience in India over the past 25 years and the conceptual and policy work undertaken at the global level following UNCHE, including in the UN, UNEP, IUCN, the Club of Rome, the World Commission on Environment and Development, the South Commission, and the South Centre.. The founding meeting of DAG was held in December 2006.. (DAG Founding members click) when a paper setting out its basic orientation and objectives was adopted (Main points of DAG Framework paper click) and its articles of association approved.. (Main points of DAG Articles of Association click) The Chancellerie d’État of the République et Canton de Genève included DAG in the register of NGOs on 23 January 2007..

Descriptive info: DAG's Objectives.. DAG’s principal aim is to contribute to maintaining and further developing the conceptual and policy advances that have emerged over the last four decades by providing a nexus for intergenerational dialogue and cross-fertilization.. It aims to keep alive and advance a genuine systems approach to the global challenge of sustainable development.. Such an approach was attempted primarily at the conceptual level, at the two Earth Summits - UNCED at Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and UNCSD at Johannesburg in 2002.. However, it continues to meet resistance and practical obstacles and is the cause of heated debate and disagreement.. Neoliberal globalization, and the associated economic, social and environmental crises, including climate change, have given much greater urgency to the key issues of how to manage and govern the emerging global  ...   particular in dealing with the energy, development and environment complex.. These all point to the need for a systems approach and restructuring of the world order on a cooperative and equitable basis, and for a corresponding organizing paradigm and a global vision.. In sum, DAG aims to enter the global battlefield or market of ideas, exploring conceptual, explanatory and policy frameworks in relation to policy and action in the society-economy-environment nexus.. In particular, DAG aims to contribute its small part to the need to counter the traditional intellectual and institutional asymmetry in the global arena, in which a few developed countries have dominated the analytical and prescriptive domain, thereby exercising inordinate influence over thinking, multilateral discourse, negotiations and action, using this dominance to protect and advance their own interests and strategic objectives..

Descriptive info: Three closely interrelated areas of work are envisaged for DAG, namely:.. the wider dissemination of local level initiatives, knowledge and experience of DA and similar bodies in developing countries, particularly with a view to promoting South-South cooperation and exchanges;.. conceptual and policy-oriented analytical work, including linking the local and global and addressing larger, systemic questions;.. 3.. analyzing and commenting on the work of international bodies concerned with different aspects of sustainable development, in particular that of the United Nations, the body designated by the international community to lead global action in dealing with these challenges.. DAG's policy analyses will draw on the skills of a network of internationally recognized scholars and public  ...   and speak out on these issues and their interrelationships that often remain unexplored within a single institution.. It will project a South perspective and will draw the attention of developing country governments, the Group of G77 and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to the results of its work.. It will make widely available its policy and research papers and other outputs.. Descriptive info: Where DAG is today.. The process of setting up an office and raising sufficient funds to become operational is still underway.. Nevertheless, in the period 2007-2008, some initial substantive work has been undertaken in two fields.. First, a proposal to hold a "Founex 2" meeting was prepared following consultations, including with some of those who took part in organizing the 1971 Founex Seminar.. (Founex 2 draft proposal click) The 1971 Founex seminar report on Development and Environment played a critical role in paving the ground for the 1972 Stockholm Conference.. The Founex report was the first to identify key environment-development objectives and relationships, and contributed to identifying and bridging the policy and conceptual differences that separated developed and developing countries at this early stage.. This seminar demonstrated the importance of policy-oriented work, and indeed provided the foundations for subsequent environment-development efforts and deliberations.. It is DAG's view that organizing a gathering patterned on Founex to examine the main issues regarding the present environment-development nexus would be highly beneficial, in particular from the perspective of North-South relations in the context of growing tensions regarding the respective responsibilities of developed and developing countries in trying  ...   debate with representatives from the North in a Founex 2 exercise.. The initial proposal for this meeting has been prepared.. (South-South meeting draft proposal click),.. and efforts to mobiize funding and secure the venue, are underway.. DAG has also made its first public and formal appearance.. Four of its founding members contributed to a joint paper.. “The Millennium Development Goals: A Costly Diversion from the Road to Sustainable Development – Critical Perspectives” (click here),.. which was prepared under the auspices of DAG and TRANSCEND for the 9th World Summit of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, Paris, 11-13 December 2008.. During 2009, DAG aims to make visible progress in relation to the following three objectives:.. To begin using the website to make known and available DAG’s work and make progress towards establishing the website as an Internet address for communication and exchange between organizations and individuals, especially in the South, that work on similar issues and along similar policy lines as DAG;.. To organize the envisaged South-South meeting and pursue preparations for Founex 2;.. To make headway in obtaining office space, securing initial seed financing, and engaging the services of some qualified young people..

Descriptive info: Monograph by.. Boutros Boutros-Ghali and Branislav Gosovic.. Global Leadership and Global Systemic Issues:.. South, North and the United Nations in a 21st Century World.. This analysis of “global leadership” delves into the question of who should be in the vanguard of global policy issues of systemic nature and worldwide concern, e.. g.. , global finance and monetary system, climate change, global governance and the nature of the emerging world society.. Global systemic issues will arise increasingly due to growing interdependence and interrelationships of the countries and peoples of the  ...   with and act on such complex issues.. Achieving this goal will require strengthening the United Nations, overcoming unilateralism and the traditional intellectual dominance of the North, and evolving approaches that correspond to the nascent polycentric world system.. This think piece by two veterans of global multilateral politics, enduring idealists and believers in the UN, is a contribution both to the scholarship of international relations and organizations, and to global policy activism, debate and thinking about the nature and direction of world economic and political order in the 21st century..
