  • Title: Green Building Guidance | UK Green Building Council
Descriptive info: UK-GBC's Green Building Guidance work aims to offer clarity, cohesion and leadership to a disparate sector, bringing together everyone involved in the complex process of planning, designing, constructing, maintaining and operating buildings to deliver truly sustainable outcomes.. What exactly should we be doing on sustainability?.. One of the main reasons the UK Green Building Council was established was to facilitate the sharing of good practice and advice, and to aggregate learning from within the membership so industry could make demonstrable progress towards a sustainable built environment.. It was envisaged that UK-GBC could provide a ‘first-port-of-call’ for any professional, from across the building lifecycle or value chain, to be directed towards the most useful information appropriate to the issue they faced.. In practice that has proved a continuous challenge, as the sheer volume of information, tools, guidance, training courses, products and services all purporting to help create a sustainable built environment has mushroomed over recent years.. In many ways, this is to be welcomed, but for organisations throughout the construction, products and property sector – whether as providers or users of those products and services - navigating that landscape has become increasingly complex.. Where should you go for the best information and advice? How can one product or service be compared against another? What are the most progressive targets to set? How can ‘greenwash’ be avoided? • Title: The ‘Industry Business Plan’ | UK Green Building Council
Descriptive info: If ‘UK Built Environment Plc’ was a mega conglomerate operating in the property, construction and infrastructure sector, what would its plan look like for the next 10 or 20 years? In late 2011 and early 2012 we explored this question in one of our most ambitious projects to date.. A Plan for Growth.. In the wake of the worst economic crisis in living memory, mounting scarcity of resources and increased pressure on businesses to innovate and rethink the principles by which they are governed, UK-GBC turned to its members to ask - what does the sector need to do to ensure its survival, generate economic growth, meet customers’ needs and deliver positive social and environmental outcomes?.. To help answer these questions, our 'Industry Business Plan' project brought together a cross-section of business leaders to develop scenarios for future operating environments, and conduct an analysis to determine a range of strategic options for the industry.. The project aimed to give organisations the space to rethink 'business as usual' and take some time to model some innovative ideas that responded to the likely future operating environment to deliver high value, low-carbon and sustainable growth opportunities.. The full report is available here.. About the process.. We brought together a number members and partners to develop a series of innovative commercial ideas and operations to revolutionise the way the sector does business.. These ideas were explored through workshops which encouraged participants to model future scenarios and reimagine their business models accordingly.. The ultimate aim was to challenge current assumptions about how the industry should work and seek out ‘disruptive’ ideas which could offer opportunities for the sector going forwards.. More on the process can be found here.. The project in brief.. A short summary of the project can be viewed here:.. The five ideas.. As part of the process, the Business Plan participants developed a set of five innovations which represent some of the latent opportunities for the sector:.. ‘Community Collaborators’.. which aims to provide support to kick-start sustainable community infrastructure projects.. ‘Great Home, No Hassle’.. - an idea focused on rethinking home ownership to get more people onto the property ladder.. ‘Liveable Places’.. – an online one-stop-shop for anyone wanting to buy, sell or rent a home who wants to know  ...   encourage retrofitting.. Collaboration is key.. Pan-industry collaboration has the potential to open up new opportunities across the supply chain and building lifecycle to better meet customers’ needs, drive cost-effectiveness and promote sustainable working practices.. Communities are mobilising.. Organisations need to tap into community interests, whether at localised level or within ‘communities of shared interest’.. People increasingly want to join forces with like-minded others, and use this increased leverage to meet their needs.. The project highlighted potential opportunities for businesses to provide online services for communities to promote greener living, and opportunities to facilitate community-scale procurement of utilities.. Consumers want customisation as standard.. People want the economies of mass production twinned with the personal touch and successful businesses need to create opportunities for their customers to help shape their products and services to meet these dual needs.. This is highlighted in a proposal for a new business venture that takes self-build from niche to mainstream, allowing much greater choice in the design of new homes.. Feedback.. • Title: Retrofit | UK Green Building Council
Descriptive info: The refurbishment of our homes and buildings is one of the greatest challenges we face.. The majority of our existing stock requires some level of retrofit to enable us to live and work more sustainably.. Introduction to retrofit.. There are 26 million homes and about 1.. 8 million non-domestic buildings in the UK and their energy use is responsible for 26% and 17% of our CO2 emissions respectively.. The majority of those homes and buildings will still be standing in 2050, meaning that we need to undertake a massive programme of green retrofit and energy demand reduction across almost the entire stock.. This refurbishment work would enable us to:.. Meet our climate change goals.. Improve energy security.. Tackle fuel poverty.. Create green jobs.. UK-GBC does work around both.. home retrofit.. non-domestic retrofit..
