  • Title: Online airline fee information
Descriptive info: Online airline fee information.. 94% of summer travelers using online travel sites want airline fee information available.. Survey results show need for DOT action to protect travelers ability to see, compare and buy the full all-in cost of air travel.. WASHINGTON - Open Allies for Airfare Transparency released the results of a summer 2012 travel experiences survey, conducted online by leading market research firm Harris Interactive among 2,310 U.. S.. adults ages 18 and older, which found that 94% of Americans who recently used an online travel company (OTC) to book their travel this summer agreed that, "All airline fee information should be available to travel agents and online travel websites.. ".. In addition, 95% of Americans who used an OTC to book their summer travel agreed that, "It would be easier to comparison shop if all airline fee information was available on online travel websites and to travel agents.. "These results should be a wake-up call for the Department of Transportation," said David Kelly, executive director of Open Allies.. "Consumers do not like to be held captive by the airline industry, whether stuck on the runway or shopping for a summer vacation.. The survey data demonstrates that consumers expect airlines to share fees in a transparent and purchasable format in all the channels where they sell their fares, and if the airlines will not do this on their own, then the Department of Transportation should exercise its authority to require it.. While online travel sites are required to disclose a list of baggage fees charged by airlines, the airlines are not required to fully disclose various charges such as checked baggage or preferred seat assignment fees in a way that allows consumers  ...   the frustration of unexpected fees because the airlines refuse to share this information with online travel sites and travel agents," said Kelly.. There is also good news for the airlines in the survey s results: not only do Americans want airline fee information to be available to online travel sites and travel agents, they also indicated they would likely purchase these services if they were available through those channels.. In fact, 57% of Americans who used an OTC to book their summer travel agreed that they would "purchase additional services (e.. g.. , extra leg room, early boarding, checked bags) if the airline fees for these services were available through online travel websites and travel agents.. Finally, when asked an open ended question why they supported having airline fee information available to online travel sites and travel agents, Americans gave a number of common sense responses including:.. To know the total cost up frontNo unexpected expensesDislike hidden fees/chargesAbility to compare airlines/feesSo consumers can know exactly what they re paying forTo get the best dealTo make informed decisions.. "These survey results clearly show that consumers are being harmed because the airlines are refusing to share fee information with popular online travel sites and travel agents which account for more than 50% of all travel booked in the U.. ," said Charles Leocha, founder of the Consumer Travel Alliance.. "There s simply no excuse for the airlines to keep consumers in the dark about the total cost of their travel.. That s why it s time for the DOT to step in and restore the ability for true comparison shopping by requiring the airlines to share fee information with online travel sites and travel agents..

  • Title: Tourists pay for extras on All Inclusive holidays
Descriptive info: Tourists pay for extras on All Inclusive holidays.. 14 million tourists pay for extras on All Inclusive holidays.. More than three-quarters of UK holidaymakers who chose to go All Inclusive ended up paying for extras they expected to be covered within the package price, according to the latest research by Post Office Travel Money.. The Post Office All Inclusive Holiday Report revealed that over 14 millionholidaymakers paid extra for items that included international alcoholic and soft drink brands, bottles of wine, bottled water, cocktails, internet access and a la carte meals.. And, although 88 per cent of holidaymakers expected all meals to be included, a Post Office survey of 40 hotels in 20 destinations worldwide5 found that only a third included a la carte dining, some because they only offered buffet meals, others because they charged guests extra to eat in a la carte restaurants.. As a result, one in six of the All Inclusive holidaymakers who took part in the study – three million people – collectively paid £76.. 8 million (based on an average of £25.. 72 each) for meal choice.. While meals were the biggest expense, the study revealed that extra charges for a range of drinks also cost millions more pounds.. Internet access was  ...   two-thirds of All Inclusive trips by UK holidaymakers.. “However, as the numbers rise, so do expectations and in almost every cost category that we looked at the All Inclusive offer made by hotels fell short of what holidaymakers expected.. This may explain why although it is possible not to spend any extra on an All Inclusive holiday, we found that less than a quarter of holidaymakers did so.. “Quality is an issue for many people.. When we asked for comments about AllInclusive experiences – particularly food, the quality ratings were much higher for long haul resorts than for European ones.. Brown went on to offer advice for holidaymakers planning to take the All Inclusive option.. He said: “Since most people pay for extras, the important thing is to carry enough foreign currency to cover items that are excluded from All Inclusive packages as this will save paying bank transfer charges on card transactions.. Before booking an All Inclusive holiday, check carefully to see what is included and plan expenditure accordingly.. Change money before leaving home to avoid poor airport rates and hidden charges for using ATMs abroad, particularly for debit cards.. Instead load cash for unforeseen costs onto a pre-paid card like the Post Office Travel Money Card Plus..

  • Title: Air France-KLM Halves Operating Loss
Descriptive info: Air France-KLM beat expectations by halving its operating loss in the second quarter as cost-cutting begins to bear fruit, and told unions there was no alternative to restructuring plans now hinging on the support of French pilots.. The Franco-Dutch group, which last week failed to win a key ballot of cabin unions, said operating losses fell in the second quarter to 66 million euros from 145 million a year earlier as it managed to squeeze non-fuel costs.. Revenues grew 4.. 5 percent to 6.. 5 billion euros.. Shares in the airline, formed from a merger of French and Dutch carriers in 2004, shot up 13 percent to 4.. 40 euros as management stuck to its guns on restructuring and issued forecasts implying smaller then expected losses for the year.. Some Air France unions say the measures are excessive.. "The on-going union discussions are critical to a successful turnaround and Air France-KLM, but see value at current levels based on these better than expected result," analysts at Goodbody said.. "These results demonstrate how crucial the success of the Transform 2015 plan is to the turnaround of the group," Chairman and Chief Executive Jean-Cyril Spinetta said in a statement.. Net losses widened to 895 million euros from 197 million, hit by  ...   that we don t have a choice: the measures we proposed are meant to ensure the survival of the company and its recovery in coming years," Finance Director Philippe Calavia told reporters.. "The majority of our colleagues have understood this.. Air France-KLM, 15 percent owned by the French government, faces a delicate task pushing through its proposals as the country s new Socialist government wades into a series of industrial disputes to try to prevent redundancies.. Air France-KLM kept investors guessing over a possible codeshare arrangement with Abu Dhabi s Etihad, which announced a similar deal with Irish airline Aer Lingus on Monday.. "We are looking at how we can co-operate with Etihad," Spinetta said.. He declined to comment in detail on the talks but told Reuters any deal would not involve exchanging stakes.. Ryanair, Europe s largest budget carrier which is bidding for Aer Lingus, disappointed its investors with a slide in second-quarter profits, highlighting the fragile economic backdrop as traditional carriers try to stem losses.. In Dublin, Ryanair shares fell 2 percent.. Passenger business has improved and summer bookings are "positively oriented" but cargo suffered from the weak global economy, Air France-KLM said.. Its unit costs declined 1.. 3 percent after stripping out currency and fuel prices.. Analysts were on average expecting operating losses of 216 million and a net loss of 211 million on revenues of 6.. 45 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S consensus data..
